Just three years ago, this sketch could not have happened. It’s not that the decades old staple of pop commentary didn’t have the “cojones”, the fact is they didn’t have the actors.
In 2013, SNL had just two black cast members, Keenan Thompson and Jay Pharaoh. The two were cast in every role, male and female, that was needed on the show. To think that a show dedicated to razzing current events, didn’t even have an actress who could play First Lady Michelle Obama is hard to believe.
The show finally started to address the lack of diversity in 2014, adding Sasheer Zamata and Leslie Jones to the cast. The Huffington Post did an infographic on SNL’s “Unfunny Race Problem” (shown right), displaying how things have changed over the years.
Flash forward to 2016. The Oscars are now dealing with their own diversity issues, with several actors saying they will boycott the show.
In true SNL fashion, the show tackles the issue in a way only they can.
